Do I have to put my face out there and be the face of my business? is a question that most business owners will ask themselves and one that I get asked as a marketing and ideas strategist regularly.
The Answer is YES and let me explain WHY.
Being the face of your business allows you to build that connection with your audience; it makes your brand more familiar, approachable, and authentic. If you are able to control your brand’s image and the narrative around your story, that puts you in an incredibly powerful position to connect and attract the right people you want to work with.
We have are great at coming up with plenty of reasons not to: your hair isn’t looking great, you’ve had a bad night, it’s a stressful time, but it is these things that connect you to your audience.
No one wakes up looking camera ready
We’ve all had bad nights with the kids or stressful days trying to sort out bookkeeping issues. But these are just excuses that many people come up with to stop from putting themselves out there and making that important connection with their audience who really don’t care what we look like.
Sure, you may want to look polished all the time, but to quality prospective clients, looks mean nothing it is the information you are sharing that is important to them.
We all start somewhere on the face of our business journey, if you head back into my video and photo history you will see some fails that’s for sure, but they got me to here, a little more comfortable on camera and happy to share my flaws and knowledge all at the same time.
There’s no doubting that social media changed how we connect with clients and with the wider public in general, and there is absolutely no doubt that COVID changed the way we network. What used to be done face to face is now often done via Zoom; that smile that used to draw people in at a networking event, now needs to be conveyed online.
Doing business is all about connection and having your face on your content, whether that be a video, a social media profile, your business card, or your next Zoom conference is the connection that people need to feel comfortable working with you.
Prospective clients start to know you from the posts, video, and other content you put out there.
The content establishes you as a leader and knowledgeable in your field. It gives them someone to go to when they need to learn more or want to have questions answered. Videos in particular speak to people, allow people to get to know you, help you build your profile and above all, educate your market that you truly do know your stuff.
Let’s face it – in many instances, you are your brand. It is you that needs to create the know, like, trust factor with prospective clients, not a staff member and certainly not an avatar.
Don’t hide away behind graphics or other staff members – become the face of your brand and watch it grow. Put yourself out there and reap the benefits of better connections with clients.

Whether you go and create a new video for your website, change your social media profile image or simply do an introductory post on your Facebook page so prospective clients can learn about you, it isn’t as scary as you think; and it may just bring you in a new client or two, simply because you were authentic and put yourself out there, imperfections and all.
